A genetic variation that increases the risk of obesity has been discovered. This breakthrough offers facts that could explain why some people put on weight more easily than others with a similar lifestyle.
It appears that some people inherit two copies of a variant which is close to the MC4R gene. An international survey amongst 90,000 people published in Nature Genetics shows that these people weight an average of 3.3 pounds (1.5 kg) more than those who don’t have the gene.
This newly identified effect combines with another gene that is also known to affect obesity known as FTO. Some people appear to have versions of both genes can be 8 pounds (3.5kg) to 10 pounds (4.5 kg) heavier than those with a slim genetic profile.
Some 5 to 7 percent of Caucasians have two copies of the newly discovered variant. A further study of obesity and genetics by Imperial College London finds that the variant is significantly more common amongst people of Indian descent.
