Because my campaign to lose weight with the aid of hypnosis is so successful I am often asked, “how do you hypnotize yourself?”
I will answer the question, but first I want to discuss a far more fundamental point and the one which I believe has a very relevant bearing on both the subject of weight loss and the effectiveness of hypnotism:
“Why Bother to Hypnotize Yourself Simply to Lose Weight?”
It takes time to hypnotize yourself and it takes a degree of know how to make hypnosis into a useful tool to assist you in your weight loss quest, so why spend the time hypnotizing oneself and learning how to do it effectively?
The first of the underlying questions here is, “what is your motivation for wanting to lose weight?”
If you don’t have a clear and very personal benefit that will be yours when you lose weight there is little point in setting out on the road to lose weight in the first place.
In my own mind I feel quite certain that most people who wish to lose weight don’t have a clear objective in mind when they start, neither do they have a compelling reason why they want to do it.
Motivation Comes From a Compelling Reason
Do you notice that I keep saying “compelling reason?” By that I mean a reason that will propel or drive you to keep going.
If you go to Yahoo answers or any of the diet chat rooms, you keep seeing people asking: “how can I lose weight fast?” Are these people really serious about wanting to lose weight?
If they would just stop and think about their situation for even a few seconds, they would realize that they have spent several years putting the excess fat onto their bodies; so how can they possibly expect to remove it quickly?
People who ask such simplistic questions simply have not thought about their situation at all. They have probably seen a picture in a magazine of a model in a swimsuit that appeals to them and thought to themselves, “I need to get a figure like hers in order to look good in that swimsuit. I’d better shed some pounds quickly.”
Body Fat Does NOT Disappear Quickly
The only way that I know of that body fat can be made to disappear quickly is by surgery. And cosmetic surgery of this type is seriously expensive.
There is another point that should be considered if the idea of surgery appeals to you. It is this, “if you cheat on your body by having the excess fat removed by surgery, are you really interested in the health of your body or are you simply concerned about your public image?”
It would appear that for such people public image is far more important than their health. Which brings me back to the question of your motivation. Personally I believe that health is a far more important reason for losing excess weight than public image.
Think about it this way, your body is for life. You need it to be in a good state of health if you’re going to enjoy a life filled with fun and energy. As this is unquestionably a fact then it would seem to make sense to burn off the fat in a way that cares for the wellbeing of your body and ensures its long-term health. Hence eating healthy foods and taking regular exercise makes sense as the best route to weight loss.
But did you notice that I deliberately used the words “public image” when describing shallow motivation. I believe there is a huge difference in motivation terms between “public image” and “self image”.
A Strong Self-Image is an Essential of Motivation
During some 20 years of coaching managers in large, blue-chip corporations on Personal Performance issues like confidence, motivation, leadership, communication and stress management, I came to realise that self-image was a foundation for success in any sphere of human activity.
Self-image and self-belief are closely bound together in our human makeup. If we can see ourselves taking an action and we truly believe that we can do it, there is a strong possibility that we will do it.
So, when it comes to losing body fat, we need to see ourselves with the ideal body we desire and we need to believe that we can attain that ideal body shape in order to have the motivation to achieve it.
Using your imagination in this way in order to help with weight loss demands the ability to picture ourselves with a new, improved body shape. I believe this is best achieved by working at a subconscious level.
Hypnosis is a Fast Route to Your Sub-Conscious Mind
Hypnosis is simply an advanced state of relaxation. When we are in this state it is easy to daydream and to plant suggestions into your subconscious mind.
I recently read the results of a survey which suggested that the average person spends nearly half of their life daydreaming about what they would like to happen to them. This is clear evidence that we all know how to daydream. What we have not mastered is the art of using our daydreams to program our subconscious minds so that they help us to achieve the goals of our dreams.
If you are going to use this trance state to help with weight loss you need to apply certain rules:
1. you need to regularly practice hypnotising yourself. To do this requires motivation and discipline.
2. You need to have an objective for your hypnosis sessions and a clear image of the ideal body that you are seeking to create for yourself.
3. You need to know how to plant believable and workable suggestions into your subconscious mind whilst you are in a state of hypnosis. Only when you plant workable suggestions into your subconscious can you give it the power to help you. This is why you will be more likely to succeed when you work with a skilled hypnotist during your weight loss campaign.
How I Use My Personal Motivation
My personal motivation is “Happiness”. I simply want to be happy in my life. This is my compelling reason for achieving my ideal body.
In order to enjoy the state of happiness I have two self-images, my physical self-image and my emotional self-image.
In my physical self-image I see myself as being in good health with a vibrant, energetic and strong body. Such a body needs good quality nutrition and plenty of exercise to keep it strong. I visualise such a body as being lean and sinewy. I carry this physical part of my self-image around we me all the time. For me good physical health is fundamental to my happiness.
My emotional self-image shows me as loved, confident, enthusiastic and self-disciplined.
Every day, as soon as I wake up, I hypnotize myself and programme my subconscious with my physical and emotional self-images. I do the same exercise last thing at night after turning out the light and often fall asleep during the process.
I hope I have made it clear how my self-image intertwines my emotional image and my physical image. And how these images control what I eat and my enthusiasm for physical exercise.
These are complex thoughts, feelings and images which cannot be worked out in a few minutes of thinking and imaging time. That is why your ideal body cannot be achieved quickly. But it is also why it is worth the effort to take your time to achieve what you want.
The Long Term Benefit
The wonderful long-term benefit of a successful weight loss campaign is of course the ideal body you want. The knowledge that it was achieved as a result of your efforts and that you will be able to maintain that body is the icing on the cake.
Also, as you achieve the ideal body you want you will find that, because you are in charge of the campaign, you will grow in confidence and self-belief and these feelings will improve and strengthen your self-image.
As I said, all of these feelings and images are intertwined.
How To Hypnotise Yourself
I use two methods.
When I am near my computer or a CD player, I use recordings to talk me down into a state of relaxation. These recordings are specifically designed to help me relax and daydream about my ideal body. They encourage me to eat healthy, tasty foods, to exercise regularly, and feel happy, confident and enthusiastic.
It is very useful to have a “voice in your ear” as you drift away into your daydreams. The voice serves to direct your thoughts and remind you of what you should be daydreaming about.
The recordings also provide fresh ideas to my subconscious mind so that the programming messages do not get stale.
When I am lying in bed at night or in the morning, I simply do breathing exercises and use my hypnotic triggers to send me quickly into trance mode where I visualise my ideal body and my emotional self-images.
