Carrots are Healthy Because

Carrots are healthy because they are very low on calories. They keep your waistline slim and keep body fat at bay which protects to you against some serious diseases. At the same time carrots give you lots of the immune defense friendly beta carotene, plus food fibre which is good for your stomach and circulation.

Tip: Carrots are renowned for their ability to stabilize your blood sugar level. For this reason snacking on carrots is a good good way to prevent your blood sugar level rollercoasting during the day.

Energy per 100 grams: 36 kcal
Protein: 0.7 grams
Fat: 0.4 grams
Carbohydrate: 8.8 grams

The Recipe of the Day:

This soup has enough in it to serve as a meal for 4. Nice with some whole grain bread.

Carrots and beer soup

Ingredients:

* 12 carrots

* 1 leek

* 1 large fennel

* 6 potatoes

* 3 chicken breasts

* 2 cans of beer

* 2 pints of chicken stock

* salt, fresh ground black pepper and olive oil

(Vegetarian variation: substitute chicken with mushroom and chicken stock with veggie stock)

Directions:

1. Chop up the veggies and the peeled potatoes not too fine. Chop the chicken into bite size bits.

2. Put a big pan on the hob, and heat the oil. Stir frythe chicken for about 4 minutes, then add the veggies, beer, stock and a lot of fresh ground pepper. Bring to the boil, and turn down heat. Cover and allow to cook for about 25 minutes. Take care the veggies don’t get over cooked.

3. Add salt and pepper if needed.

Exercise of the Day

Tones lower stomach muscles.

Lie on your back, flat on the floor, legs stretched out, toes pointing away from you, hands by your sides, palms facing down. Raise your heels 12 inches from the floor. Spread your feet as far apart as you can. Hold for a count of 5. Feet together again. Lower your feet to the floor. Rest. Then repeat 5 times.

Over the course of a few days, increase the number of repetitions.

The Fire That Melts Body Fat

Ideal Body Fat

There is a tendency to relate body fat to being overweight and this is not necessarily the case.

All human beings need body fat. The amount you need depends on your body shape and type, your age and whether you are male or female.

Women need more body fat than men. For males a healthy amount of body fat is in the range of 8% to 25%. For females a healthy amount is in the range 21% to 36%.

The younger you are the less body fat you should have. For young 20 to 30 year old males the ideal body fat level is around 8% to 19%, whereas once males pass their sixtieth birthday 13% to 25% is healthy.

For younger 20 to 30 year old females ideal body fat is in the region of 21% to 33%. Retired, sixty plus year olds should aim for 24% to 36%.

These differences explain, to some extent, why women find it more difficult than men to lose weight.

How To Measure Body Fat

The least scientific, but still useful method, which anyone can do, even as you read this article, is to hold up one arm and pinch the area at the back, just opposite your bicep muscle. If there is very little flabbiness there, it is a good sign. A lot of flab probably means that your body fat is too high.

Body Fat Callipers have been in use for a long time. They require training to use properly so that they give accurate readings. Their usefulness has probably been superseded by more modern body fat weighing machines. These machines are more accurate and much quicker to use.

For measuring body fat accurately we would recommend using one of the specially designed devices. The small hand-held devices seem to have accuracy problems. Generally speaking the weighing scale type of machine seems to work more accurately.

You should take care not to exercise or drink too much or too little before using any body fat measuring device.

The machines we recommend for measuring body fat is the Tanita of Illinois. They are available in most countries.

If you want a totally accurate and reliable body fat measurement you will need to have a total body scan.

The US Navy Seal test uses the measurement of the thinnest part of your wrist, your neck, waist and height to provide an estimate. This method of measuring has been around for a long time and is reasonably accurate.

So much fuss is made about body fat in this age of obesity that we can lose sight of the fact that we need body fat.

OK so we don’t need blubber and a whale-like body, but enough is essential for good health.

The ideal body fat amount for a healthy human being differs between men and women. It also differs according to how old you are.

Our research indicates that expert opinion differs a little. But if you follow the body fat chart below you will not be far out.

Once you start to climb above the higher of the percentages listed above you have too much body fat. This is not healthy. Excess body fat can lead to diabetes, blocked arteries and heart disease. Once you move into the danger zone it is time to take serious action to lose weight for the sake of your health.

Body Fat Percentages Affect The Shape of Your Body

Body fat is important because it has a direct bearing on your body shape.

A pound of fat occupies a greater area than a pound of muscle and does not look so firm.

So, the lower your body fat and the higher your muscle density the slimmer more shapely your body is likely to look.

Also, excess fat wobbles around and looks unsightly.

Use Your Body Fat Percentages to Motivate Your Slimming Campaign

I am a great believer in looking in the mirror. It gives a good idea of how much fat I am losing and how much muscle tone I am gaining. It is very encouraging. Of course, you do need to be exercising as well as eating healthy to see the benefits.

You can be more scientific by having your doctor or physician measure your body fat percentages on a Body Composition Analyser (BCA) machine.

BCA’s are now also available for home use at prices not much above those for ordinary weighing scales. However, as the cheap versions are simply stand-on we rather doubt that they are quite as accurate as the professional models. However, they can still provide you will useful guidance as to your body fat levels.

Tanita of Illinois invented the first stand on Body Composition Analyser to utilise Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology in 1992, and they are still the world leaders in this field.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis is Tanita’s method of indirectly measuring body composition. A safe electrical signal is sent through your body from patented pressure-contact electrodes that are housed in a single stand-alone unit. Your body fat percentage is calculated using an equation based on values such as height, age, gender and body type.

You can find your local Tanita BCA stockist on the Tanita.com website where you can also buy online. Prices start from around $100. In the UK you can buy from Argos for around £49.95.

The key to good health is to take positive action to lose weight and tone up your body as soon as you discover that your body fat exceeds the percentages indicated for your age group. This might be a good time to get really serious about losing weight and consider joining The Elite Slimmers.

Everyone has a trigger - a point in time where you decide to finally take action. For some, it’s a trip to the doctor’s office. For others, it could be a special occasion where you want to look your best - a wedding, a reunion, or a beach vacation.

For me, it was one of the socially awkward situations that fat people often find themselves in.

So there I was, breathing heavily and drenched in sweat. I had just “sprinted” (or as some might call it, “rumbled”) through McCarran International Airport to catch the last flight back to the East Coast on a leisure trip to Las Vegas. My bags were strapped around my chest and digging into my ample man cleavage. You could hear the groans and huffs directed at the late arriving passenger as soon as I got on the jetway. Those quickly turned into eye rolls and squished faces as they saw my sweaty, fat self turn the corner and board the plane. I struggled to fit my bags, my gut and my rump down the extremely narrow aisle (it was later I realized that the aisle was so narrow because half the plane was as fat as I was, they just weren’t sweating because they were on time). I arrived at my row to find that I was rewarded with a 757 middle seat…a fate worse than death for a fat man. Not only that, but the entire plane is waiting for me to stow my bags and get seated so we can make the long trek home.

So as I struggle to fit my bag under the seat, I could feel the eyes focused on my big, fat sweaty butt bent over, undoubtedly brushing the shoulder of the person across the aisle. Unfortunately, my rear was so big that I had kind of lost feeling in the farthest reaches of it, so if I was hitting into something I didn’t really know it. I got my bags wedged in under the seat in front of me, and now it was time for the fun part - wedging my rump into the seat.

I could see the lucky person in the window seat fidgeting as I entered the row, staring out the window blankly with a scowl on her face. She knew that, not only was she going to be sitting next to a sweaty, fat guy for 4+ hours, but that if I needed some extra space I would most likely be leaning in her direction, as she was smaller in stature than the woman occupying the aisle seat.

I get into the seat and struggle with pulling the seatbelt out from under my weighty butt. The entire time I can see the beads of sweat flying to and fro and landing on the floor and seat in front of me - enough to make even me throw up in my mouth just a little. I am muttering to myself, praying that I won’t need a seatbelt extension. Luckily I have enough abdominal strength to suck in just enough to get the seatbelt around me. When I breathe out again and try to sit back, I can feel the vinyl armrests digging into my sides and the cold sweat-soaked shirt slowly sticking to my skin all up and down my back. The woman on the aisle gave me a look of disgust as she sat back down, Mrs. Glass House that she was.

As the captain made his announcements, I could feel my heart rate return to “normal” and could also feel the rash forming on the sides of my gut from the relentless armrests - I certainly had a case of the Dunlops (my gut had “dun-lopped” over the armrests!)

Luckily, the woman on the window had a bladder like a camel, because I closed my eyes and fell asleep - probably filling the entire plane with animal-like snores from the excess neck fat I was carrying. I didn’t want to risk being awake when the snack cart came around.

What was, in reality, 15 minutes from the time I got through airport security to the time I was seated, felt like an eternity to me. That happens when you are navigating through a most dreaded experience.

That was my watershed - or in this case, my fatshed - moment. It was then that I admitted to myself that I was fat and needed to do something about it.
